Emmanuel - St.Cyril of Alexandria PDF Print E-mail
Written by Ehab Roufail
St. Cyril of AlexandriaUnless the Son was God by Nature, He would not have been called, "God With Us,"which took place when He was born through a woman, assuming likeness with us. Not at all of an angel or of any other generate being is the word, Emmanuel, the invention but the Father thus named the Son. And the holy prophet will be our witness, saying of the Divine Offspring, "And they shall call His name that new Name which the Lord shall give Him" [IS. 62:2]. For a new name verily to the Son is Emmanuel, that is, "God with us." For before His Presence in the world with flesh, He was and was called merely God; after the Birth from the Virgin, no longer merely God, but, with us, i.e. Godmade man. Since therefore the Father calls His own Son God, let them blush who impiousl and unlearnedly say that He was made. For what is by Nature God, is not a creature.

Blessed is she who believed PDF Print E-mail

“Blessed is she who believed, for there will be a fulfilment of those things which were told to her from the Lord” Lk 1:45

It is amazing how we sometimes in our reading of scripture pass by words and verses which convey themselves with such simplicity of flow and meaning, yet when we spiritually contemplate on those very words and verses we are stopped in our mental tracks. For our hearts and our minds are left gazing at the most amazing wonders ordained by God. In the end we are left praising with King David saying, The entrance of Your words gives light; It gives understanding to the simple.” Ps 119:130 and “I have seen the consummation of all perfection, but your commandments are very broad” Ps 119:96.

Pascha and the secret of the Lords gifts PDF Print E-mail
Written by Michael Henein

jesus-of-nazarethIt is amazing how the journey of the Son of God on Earth for our salvation was designed from its beginning to its end.  Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea…behold, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem saying ‘where is He who has been born King of the Jaws?’ For we have seen his star in the East and have come to worship him. They came from far away having seen the extraordinary appearance of a star that signifies the birth of the Messiah and followed it until it stood over the place where the Babe Jesus was born. They then entered the place rejoicing, worshiped him and presented him their gifts: Gold (representing royalty), Frankincense (representing priesthood) and Myrrh (representing sorrow). The story takes us then through almost thirty three years of Jesus’ life until we meet him again during the Pascha week where we can clearly see the fulfilment of the prophecy of the Magi’s gifts.

‘On A Mission’

We clinicians belong to various Societies according to our specialties. We are all, however, members of one society ‘The Coptic Medical Association’ suggesting that we share something in common. What we share is one and the same vision: that we are all on a mission in our profession. That mission is to serve our fellow human beings to the best of our ability. In this, we are copying the founder of our association ‘Lord Jesus’.

Life with Christ PDF Print E-mail
Written by Lydia

In February 2007 there was a beautiful conference in Northampton about living as a Christian.  The main speaker was Abouna Anthony from Washington DC, who gave us 5 awe-inspiring talks.  Those who listened to the talks felt blessed to hear such jewels of wisdom not only spoken with eloquence but also with a light-hearted humour.  The conference was blessed also by the presence of our beloved Anba Boulis and some of the priests from our own UK churches, who showed each other such love, respect and joy when in each other's company that the words spoken in the talks had even more meaning and beauty.  Abouna Anthony talks about the verse in John 10:10 that says, "I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly" and he talks about why most of us are not living this incredible life that God wants to give us and how we can life the abundant life with Christ.

Christ is invited over. Simon does everything as he was taught. He sets out the table, he invites the guests, and he prepares himself for this Great Teacher. He sits down with him and engages him in the normal topics of conversation. Simon does little to offend or dishearten his guest; Simon rarely makes mistakes and is known to receive guests in a generous manner.

Once a retreat was arranged for the servants in the church of St. Peter, the Seal of the Martyrs, in Alexandria. The church at the time was still in the beginning of its development and it was expected that there would be some 80 servants on this retreat day in the church. However many servants did not come, and the numbers were no higher than 30 servants.
