January 16th 2011.

Christmas and the New Year were marked by two bloody and ominous attacks
on Christian worshippers in Iraq and Egypt.
On December 30th, in Baghdad, at least two Christians were killed and
nine wounded in a string of six attacks on Christian homes. The areas
targeted were predominantly Christian areas, and the homes attacked were
specifically Christian homes. And, on new Year's Eve, an even
more lethal attack resulted in the massacre of over 20 Egyptian Coptic
Christians in the ancient city of Alexandria.
The old year ended and the new one opened with bloodshed that tragically
points to attempts to systematically annihilate the ancient churches of
the Middle East.

At least 21 people have been killed and more than 70 injured in Egypt in a suspected suicide bombing outside a church in Alexandria as worshippers left a new year service.
It was
initially thought a car bomb had caused the explosion just after
midnight at the Coptic orthodox al-Qidiseen church. But the interior
ministry suggested a foreign-backed suicide bomber may have been
responsible.

Official Press Release of the Coptic Orthodox Church in the United Kingdom
regarding the New Year's Eve at the Church of Saints Mark and Peter in Alexandria
We are
deeply saddened and disturbed that once again, days of joy and
celebration have been turned into a time of mourning and weeping. Our
immediate thoughts and prayers are with all those who were affected by
the bombing at the Church of Saints Mark and Peter in Alexandria: those
who have lost their lives, their families, those who were injured,
members of that parish, Christian communities in general, and Christians
throughout the land of Egypt.
This was a
time when Christians went as families to pray in the safety of the house
of God. Men, women, children and the elderly gathered together in
prayer for a happy and peaceful new year. Instead, they became the
innocent victims of a most horrific, callus and cowardly act of terror
and violence.
